Family & Friends

Like all of us, many residents at Davis Guest Home maintain personal connections outside of our facilities. We encourage and promote this, but would also like to take the opportunity to provide a helpful guide in order to facilitate smooth communication and visits.

Visiting Davis Guest Homes

Let us know in advance - it's helpful to everyone.

We can help facilitate a good visit for you. Making sure that residents are physically and mentally prepared to host company is an important detail. When we can, we like to offer them a head's up that they have a an upcoming visit to allow them to prepare. Also, we maintain visitor hours in each of our facilities which may be helpful for you to be aware of. If you'll give us a call, we'll make sure that you're well informed, and that the resident you're planning to visit has the necessary information as well.

Off-site vs On-site Visits

We often have visitors that will ask if they may take their their loved one off site for a meal, for shopping, or to just spend some time together. This is fantastic, and we are encouraging of these opportunities. However, given the 'conserved' legal status of many of our residents, in order to leave our facility, we do have to have written permission from their court-appointed public guardian (the conservator). Appropriate time is needed to gain these approvals (a PDF of the form needed for this is below if you'd like to help with this). We are happy to assist with this communication, however, and to facilitate this process for you. Just let us know what you are planning, and we'll work on putting it together in advance. Some families have direct communication with conservators as well, which is great, as long as we are eventually looped in with written permission for the visit, and with enough time to prepare anything that needs to be done in advance. Please note that due to regulations, when you arrive, if you plan on using a vehicle for transportation we will need a copy of your unexpired driver's license, vehicle registration, and insurance (each must be current).

On-site visits are easier as permissions are more relaxed. A courtesy call to let us know that you're coming is appreciated, and we'll try to have everything ready for you. We'd also like the opportunity to share our visitor hours with you, and notify you if your loved one may be scheduled to be out of the facility during your planned time (medical appointments, activities, etc).

A Few House Rules to Note

Families and friends can be very generous when visiting their loved ones in our facilities, which we appreciate and are encouraging of. But please note the following limitations when planning your visit though, as it helps us to manage our facilities and our population of many people who we provide care for:

- We have limited storage space available in our facilities for food items. Please only bring a meal or food that your loved one may consume in a sitting, or by the end of the day at most. We also have a responsibility to ensure that residents are reasonably adhering to their physician-prescribed diets. Some folks are trying to lose weight and may have some limitations. Others may be severely diabetic or have food allergies. Please ask us if you have questions, and help us maintain the good health of your loved one during your visit.

- Given the above concerns, we ask that you would not provide food to other residents. Occasionally there may be an exception to this, but please give us a call and discuss with one of our helpful administrators in order to make a plan first please if you have a creative idea.

- Please enjoy any food in only designated spaces. This helps us keep our facilities clean, and pests outside.

- We have limited storage space available in our facilities for personal items. Some folks have a lot of stuff! Our residents live in shared spaces that need to be maintained with appropriate belongings for these spaces. If you're planning a shopping spree, let us know, and we would be happy to help give you an idea of what your loved one's needs are (clothing, TV's that are sized appropriately, etc). We're also happy to help go through clothing and figure out what still fits, or what needs to go in the donation pile to prepare for new items coming in. Please give us a head's up that you're planning a shopping outing or planning to bring stuff for them so we can do our part and help prepare. Finally, if there is just too much stuff in their room, be aware that we may not be able accommodate the storage.

- This probably goes without saying, but things like lighters, knives, paraphernalia and other contraband are strictly prohibited. If you have questions, just ask - we're here to help!

- If you're planning on bringing cigarettes for your loved one, please make sure that these are turned in to staff instead of given directly to them. We have a cigarette management program at Davis Guest Home, which helps to stave off potential chaos in the ranks. We appreciate you helping us maintain order in this.

- Many of our residents LOVE caffeine! In some mental illnesses though, this stimulant can cause symptoms to dramatically increase. Increased symptoms may lead to behavioral outbursts that are difficult to manage. We've had residents hospitalized (sometimes needing to move as well, sadly losing their home) when they've over-consumed caffeine. It can be a big deal. Please connect with the administrator about how much caffeine may be appropriate and healthy for your loved one to consume, and help us to maintain this. It's in their best interest to say no sometimes, though many folks at Davis Guest Home do consume daily monitored amounts of caffeine in sodas and coffee.

- Residents at Davis Guest Home each have managed financial accounts that is part of the program that Davis Guest Home offers. Participation is mandatory for residents. This helps reduce chaos, and residents potentially taking advantage of each other. Please help us maintain the peace by turning in any money that you would like to give your loved one to an Administrator. If they aren't present, a Manager can assist with this as well. The money will be put on their books by the following morning. If you have specific instructions that you'd like the money to be spent on, let us know and we'll work on helping to make sure that this happens. We can take cash or checks from you to place money on their account. Please make the check out to your loved one.

- Gift cards are convenient for most of us, but for our residents, they must be managed. It is complicated to manage these for a lot of people and difficult to track usage (not to mention value being lost if there's a remaining balance, but it is not enough to make a purchase). As a result, we ask that you please do not bring gift cards for your loved ones as we cannot be responsible for these, and our rules do not allow them to hold the cards themselves. If you would like to put money for specific uses on their account, we'll be happy to help with this. We can take cash or checks from you to place money on their account. Please make the check out to your loved one.

We appreciate your help in the above list. Our goal is to maintain the best environment we can for your loved one as well as all of the other folks that live in our facilities, and your assistance in these items helps a lot. As always, if you have any questions, give us a call and we'll be delighted to assist you.
